CHAPEL HILL – The NC General Assembly and Gov. Roy Cooper adopted an ambitious goal: To provide an additional 400,000 North Carolinians with degrees or high-quality credentials by 2030 beyond those who are already expected to earn degrees or credentials.1
“The goal of myFutureNC is by the year 2030, to have 2 million people (ages 25-44) with either a college degree or a good certificate that equips them for a productive job in our economy,” Interim UNC System President William Roper says in the accompanying video.
“That’s important so that we can participate fully in the growth of the American economy,” Roper says.
Existing and prospective NC employers “want to know that the educational pipeline – not just the University System, but the private universities and the community colleges and the K-12 system – they want to know that we’re all lined up producing what they need, which is knowledge workers, good citizens, folks who are equipped to play a leading role in society in North Carolina,” he says.
“We just have to up our game. What was good enough to get us to where we are is not good enough to get us to where we need to be.”
